A new entrance to the ancient Roman
necropolis of the Via Triumphalis in the Vatican Museums is to
be inaugurated on November 17.
Entrance to the archaeological site will be possible directly
from the Porta di Santa Rosa gate, a monumental entrance to the
Vatican City State created by sculptor Gino Giannetti in the
section of the Vatican Walls overlooking Piazza Risorgimento.
The new entrance will allow direct access to the necropolis,
entrance to which has until now been combined with a visit to
the Vatican Museums.
Consequently visitors will be able to admire the excavations
under the Vatican gardens including mosaics, frescoes and burial
chambers as part of a new guided tour experience to the
necropolis alone promoted by the Governorate of the Vatican City
State in consideration of the upcoming 2025 Jubilee.
The site will be accessible on Fridays and Saturdays upon prior
booking on the official Vatican Museums website
