Pope Francis told Israeli President
Isaac Herzog that "you cannot respond to terror with terror", in
reference to Israel's offensive in Gaza after the October 7
Hamas attack in Israel, in what was described as a "tense"
recent phone call, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
The WP cited an Israeli official covered by anonymity, who was
aware of the content of the conversation.
Herzog, the US newspaper said, protested, reiterating the
position that the Israeli government was doing what was
necessary in Gaza to defend its people.
He went on to say that the perpetrators (Hamas) should be held
accountable, not the civilians, the WP said.
