The devastating effects of the climate
crisis have already create an offence against God and the hour
is urgent to mitigate them, Pope Francis said in his address to
the plenary session of the COP28 UN climate conference Saturday,
read out at Expo City in Dubai by Cardinal Secretary of State
Pietro Parolin as Francis has been prevented form attending in
person by a bout of chronic bronchitis and fever.
"Unfortunately I cannot be with you as I would have wished, but
I am with you because the hour is urgent," the pontiff's message
read.
"I am with you because, now as never before, everyone's future
depends on the present we choose.
"I am with you because the devastation of creation is an offence
against God, a sin that is not only personal but structural and
that spills over onto human beings, especially the weakest, a
grave danger that hangs over everyone and that risks triggering
a conflict between generations".
