Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal
Pietro Parolin said Tuesday that Israel must halt its Gaza
offensive saying too many people had died in the Strip in its
response to the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
"The voice of those asking Israel to stop is a general voice,
(saying) that they can't continue like this and we must find
other paths to solve the Gaza problem," Parolin said at the end
of an Italy-Holy See bilateral on the Lateran Pacts.
"The Holy See has said it from the beginning: on the one hand, a
clear and unreserved condemnation of what happened on October 7,
which I here reiterate; a clear and unreserved condemnation of
all kinds of antisemitism, which I here reiterate, but at the
same time a request for Israel's right to defence to be
proportionate and it certainly isn't with 30,000 dead".
Some 1,250 people were killed in the Hamas attack, and around
200 hostages taken.
