Italy is against sending troops to
fight in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday
after French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea Monday.
The possible sending of Western troops to Ukraine "is an idea of
Macron's," said Tajani, who is also deputy premier and leader of
the centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party.
"But when you talk of sending troops you must be very prudent
because we must not make people think we're at war with Russia.
"We aren't at war with Russia, we are defending Ukraine and in
my personal judgement I'm not favourable to sending Italian
troops to fight in Ukraine."
Tajani was speaking on the sidelines of the coordination
committee of Italian and Croatian ministers in Zagreb.
