Presisent Sergio Mattareall quoted
late President Luigi Einaudi at a police NATO event in Rome
Monday saying "one must exist united or disappear".
"Referring to Europe, in 1954, President of the Republic Luigi
Einaudi recalled that the spectrum of decisions for the
countries of the continent boiled down to 'exist united or
disappear'," Mattarella told the Carabinieri Mobile and
Specialised Units Command "Palidoro" for a NATO Conference.
"The experience of the Atlantic Alliance confirms the value of a
history that, in 75 years, has never betrayed its commitment to
guarantee the benefit of its 32 member countries: united in the
defence of freedom and democracy.
"A value that confirms the importance of the multilateralism
embraced by our Republic."
