Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi
said Tuesday that he is confident six officials - four finance
police and two coast guards - probed over allegedly negligent
delays in the rescue effort regarding the shipwreck of the
Summer Love boat off the Calabrian town of Cutro on February 26,
2023, will be cleared.
The disaster claimed the lives of at least 94 migrants and
refugees, including 35 children.
"I know the competence and dedication of all the members of the
finance police and the port authority who, everyday, give their
total commitment to the extraordinary work of saving lives and
fighting human traffickers," Piantedosi said. "For this reason,
I am certain that, in the subsequent judicial proceedings, the
Crotone officials will show that they have no responsibility for
the Cutro shipwreck.
"I hope that the Constitutional principle that you are not
guilty until a final sentence applies to the servants of the
State too".
