Heavy traffic is expected over the
weekend as holidaymakers will hit the road, in particular on
Saturday morning and Sunday, according to national road
association ANAS and road police Polstrada.
Intense traffic was increasing Saturday around major urban
centres across Italy towards beach resorts in the South and
mountain destinations in the North, as well as along border
crossings with France, Slovenia and Croatia.
ANAS suspended 906 worksites - or 70% of active ones across
Italy's roads - from Saturday through September 3 to ease
traffic.
An estimated 28 million Italians are expected to hit the road to
reach their holiday destination in the first two weekends of
August, Italy's highway company Autostrade per l'Italia (ASPI)
has estimated.
Traffic will peak in the first two weekends of August, when 28
million Italians are expected to travel on Italy's highways,
according to ASPI.
