Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7, has called on Iran to contribute to a phase of de-escalation across the whole Mediterranean and Middle Eastern region.
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has asked the foreign ministry's secretary general, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, to take the first formal step by conveying the message to the Iranian ambassador in Rome.
During talks on Saturday afternoon, Ambassador Guariglia delivered to Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri Rome's invitation to contribute to break the cycle of military actions that could spark a wider military clash across the region.
Tajani, according to a note issued by the foreign ministry, believes it "is important for the new administration led by President Pezeshkian and for all Iranian institutions to proceed along the path of dialogue with Europe and with all countries in the region.
"Italy will always be ready to get involved in any political and diplomatic activity", the note said.
Rome asks Iran to deal in a strategic manner with international protagonists in the region, according to the message.
The Italian government, as rotating president of the G7, will remain committed in delivering to Iran the calls for moderation coming from the group's member countries as well as from other States in the region, according to the statement.
Tajani, also within the framework of the G7, is continuing to pursue diplomatic actions of de-escalation to keep conveying his appeal for dialogue and moderation to all partners in the region, the note concluded.
