Port logistics entrepreneur Aldo Spinelli was released Monday after spending three months under house arrest. According to investigators, Spinelli corrupted former Liguria governor Giovanni Toti who was released from house arrest last week after resigning from his post.
Preliminary Investigations Judge (GIP) Paola Faggioni has however barred Spinelli from managing his businesses for 12 months.
Prosecutors Federico Manotti and Luca Monteverde had agreed to the measure provided Spinelli did not manage his companies - an opinion they granted after Spinelli donated the majority of shares in his holding company to his son Roberto, who is also under investigation.
The trial against Spinelli, Toti and Emilio Signorini, former chairman of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority is set to begin on November 5 in relation to a corruption probe.
The case regards alleged bribes in which cash for an election campaign was exchanged for favours, including the extension of a port terminal concession.
Toti faces charges of corruption and illicit financing while Spinelli and Signorini are accused of corruption.
