Swim star Gregorio Paltrinieri said Tuesday he broke his elbow on the night he was Italy's flag-bearer in the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games Sunday, but not during the ceremony itself, and would be back soon.
"I broke my elbow on the night of the closing ceremony. Not waving the flag though. That was nice. Already operated, I will be back soon," said the multiple 1500m and open water champ on Instagram, attaching a photo showing him lying on a hospital bed with his left arm in a cast.
There had been some speculation that the 29-year-old might be mulling retirement after coming ninth in the 10k open water final, but Tuesday's post has laid the talk to rest.
