The remains of two World War One
infantrymen have been found in the area of Forcella Serauta on
the Marmolada massif at an altitude of 2,700 metres in the
region of Trentino Alto Adige., Carabinieri police in Trento
have said.
The remains were discovered by an excursionist last week due to
the summer heat that melted the ice usually covering the area.
They had remained trapped for over a century in one of the zones
of the so-called 'white war' fought at a high altitude by the
Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies between 1915 and 1918.
The soldiers' remains were retrieved in an operation coordinated
by Carabinieri and finance police from the Rolle Pass, near the
mountain resort of Moena.
They have now been taken to Canazei and will likely be buried in
the military cemetery of Asiago.
Carabinieri police said the two infantrymen belonged to the Como
Brigade.
They were identified thanks to their military tags and brigade's
flash.
