Four rescuers who intervened to
extinguish a maxi brushwood fire that broke out on the outskirts
of Rome Wednesday, a firefighter and three civil protection
workers, are in critical, life-threatening condition, Giuseppe
Spaltro, who heads the burns unit of the Sant'Eugenio Hospital
in the capital, said on Thursday.
Spaltro said the most critically injured is a 51-year-old
firefighter who is the only one not to be intubated but has
burns on 54% of his body.
Three out of four rescuers "will have surgery next week to
remove the necrotic part of burns and undergo a skin transplant
from the donor bank in Cesena.
"Other surgeries will follow", added the doctor.
