A homeless Brazilian-born poet who
lived around the Vatican died this week and his funeral was
celebrated by two cardinals.
The man, Juan Carlos de Sousa, who was cared for by the Papal
Almoner. He died of an unspecified illness.
The princes of the Church who said his death Mass were the
almoner, Konrad Krajewski, and the archbishop of Manaus in
Brazil, Ulrich Steiner.
Cardinal Steiner said in a briefing with journalists on the
current Synod: "I heard that a Brazilian had died and I felt the
need to celebrate his funeral.
"Then I learned that he was a person who lived in need, who
asked for help and who wrote poetry. It was a great privilege.
"The celebration was attended by his companions, all the other
homeless people, who then placed a flower on the coffin.
"It is deeply moving: in poverty, in almost nothingness, there
exists a truly evangelical brotherhood."
