The International Tennis Integrity
Agency (ITIA) on Thursday defended its decision to clear Italy's
world number one Jannik Sinner for testing positive for a banned
substance after World Anti-Doping Agency presented an appeal
against it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
On August 20, ITIA announced that Sinner had twice tested
positive for clostebol — an anabolic steroid — in March 2024,
but it has cleared him of deliberate use.
The 23-year-old said his trainer accidentally applied the
substance to him after treating a cut with a cream.
ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse said the decision was based on an
assessment of "circumstances, facts and scientific data" and
denied that it was influenced by the "profile of the player
involved".
She added that it was taken by applying the World Anti-Doping
Code set by WADA.
