It is up to the government to define
what is a safe country in terms of migration, Premier Giorgia
Meloni said Friday after a Rome court struck down the detention
of the first 12 migrants to be taken to new processing centres
in Albania after an October 4 European Court of Justice ruling
that their provenance countries, Bangladesh and Egypt, were not
safe.
"I have called a Council of Ministers (cabinet meeting, ed.) for
Monday to approve the rules that serve to overcome this
obstacle," Meloni told a press briefing in Beirut.
"I do not believe it is up to the judiciary to define which
countries are safe and which are not.
"It is up to the government, so I believe that the government
must clarify better what is meant by a safe country".
