Europe must work to boost competitiveness in every sphere, reinforce its institutions and "do everything not to become the museum of the world" European Council President Charles Michel said Friday in an interview with the European Newsroom network, which ANSA is part of.
"We are at a turning point and it is really important for the future to maintain the same level of ambition that we had in the past, the same passion for the European project.
"We want more sovereignty, we want more influence in the world".
He added that the recent reports by Italian ex-premiers Enrico Letta and Mario Draghi, respectively on the future of the EU's single market and on reviving the bloc's competitiveness, were "crucial".
"I hope that the leaders will give a green light to the birth of the Capital Union at the next European Council," he added. He also commented on Rome's controversial agreement with Tirana to set up Italian-run migrant centres outside the EU on Albanian territory.
"I think we should not be afraid to look at operational ways, concrete ways, to be more effective in terms of migration management," Michel said.
"I don't want to interfere in the internal debate in Italy but we have to examine what the concrete modalities are and I don't mean to say that the hotspots in Albania are good or not"..
