A big chunk of stone fell from the facade of Rome's San Giacomo church on the central Via del Corso shopping street on Friday, hitting and injuring a man.
The man was taken to hospital and his condition was said not to be serious.
Municipal police and firefighters have intervened and cordoned off the area.
"Inspections were carried out this summer because the church is among those included (for funding) in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, and nothing (untoward) was found," parish priest Don Giuseppe Trappolini told ANSA.
"It's a miracle that nothing (more serious) happened, it could have been a tragedy.
"There are always people in front of the church".
