Pope Francis on Sunday celebrated the article of the Italian Constitution that says Italy rejects war, saying this principle should be adopted worldwide, during his Angelus address on Sunday.
Greeting members of Italian medical-aid NGO Emergency, the pope said that the charity upholds "Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which says that 'Italy repudiates war as an instrument of aggression against the liberty of other peoples and as a means for settling international disputes'.
"May this principle be applied worldwide: may war be banned and issues be addressed through law and negotiations.
"Let weapons fall silent, and let dialogue take their place.
"Let's pray for the tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, South Sudan," he added.
He also called for prayers for Valencia after this week's devastating floods that have claimed over 200 lives in the Spanish city and the surrounding region.
He told the faithful to ask themselves: "What am I doing for the people of Valencia? Am I praying? Offering something? Think about this question."
