Palermo preliminary hearings judge
(GUP) Paolo Magro on Tuesday sentenced Laura Bonafede, a teacher
in the Sicilian town of Campobello di Mazara who allegedly
cohabited for years with the late Cosa Nostra superboss Matteo
Messina Denaro, to 11 years and four months in prison on charges
of Mafia association.
The teacher, who is the daughter of a local boss, was initially
accused of aiding and abetting, a charge later switched to Mafia
association.
According to prosecutors, the woman and her daughter Martina
lived for years with the Cosa Nostra superboss when he was
wanted by authorities, helping him hide and communicate with
members of the crime syndicate.
Messina Denaro, 61, 'Cosa Nostra's last boss', died in September
2023 after being caught following 30 years on the run in Palermo
in January 2023.
