Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on
Wednesday congratulated the new president of the United States
Donald Trump with a post on X.
"US citizens have voted and have chosen their president",
Crosetto wrote.
"It is Donald Trump, who obtains a victory both with the
electoral college and the popular vote, which didn't happen when
he won the last time against Hillary" Clinton.
"To him, to the new future Government best wishes for a good
job, with the certainty that we will work together, as Italy and
the US have always done, to defend out common values of
democracy and freedom".
And the Defence minister also wrote that, "over a year and a
half ago, I told NATO and the EU, during Defence sessions, that
we should have prepared for the new scenario opened by a
possible victory" of Donald Trump.
"Which one? We will have to show firstly that we want and are
willing to guarantee our security and that we don't expect
American citizens and the government to think about it, at their
expense.
"We will have to entrust to the US, for many years to come, the
deterrence capability through the alliance of which we are part,
NATO, but we will have to take charge of our part of Defence,
first of all at a national and collective" levels, the defence
minister wrote on X.
