Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri on Wednesday said a preliminary exam of projects carried out by companies involved in an ongoing investigation by the local State attorney's office into corruption, auction rigging and fraud in public contracts for road maintenance in the Italian capital, does not appear to involve work connected to the Roman Catholic Jubilee Holy Year in 2025.
"I have ordered an in-depth inspection of all interventions carried out by firms involved in the ongoing investigation.
"At the moment, no interventions connected to the Jubilee appear to be involved, although the inspection is naturally still ongoing", the mayor said.
"We are following with the utmost attention the ongoing investigation, with full collaboration and a feeling of gratitude for the precious work undertaken to safeguard the law and also of indignation over the possibility that irregularities were committed", said Gualtieri.
Earlier on Wednesday, finance police searched the Campidoglio Rome municipal headquarters as part of the probe into corruption, auction rigging and fraud in public contracts for road maintenance work.
The locations searched by finance police included the offices of the municipality's public works department in Via Petroselli, where a number of documents were seized.
Prosecutors are probing municipal officials and two local police officers, investigative sources said.
An entrepreneur is suspected of having bribed public officials to obtain road maintenance contracts, the sources said.
