Italy is raising the level of attention on a still unknown disease that has led to over 140 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a letter sent by the Ministry of Health, which ANSA was able to view, the USMAF, the Maritime, Air and Border Health Offices of the Ministry of Health, are asked "to pay attention at all entry points, especially for direct flights from the country".
The local authorities in close collaboration with the international ones "are working to verify the situation and provide a rapid and effective response to this new epidemic outbreak that is affecting the country, already recently hit by the mpox epidemic", the letter said.
Italian experts said that there could be hundreds more victims among those who did not go to hospital. They said the outbreak was not yet alarming because it was limited to an area in the southeast of Congo.
