Luigi Sbarra is set to step down as
CISL trade union chief after four years with his deputy Daniela
Fumarola set to take over the reins of the former Christian
Democrat-aligned labour federation from next month.
Sbarra has to give up the reins as per CISL statutes stating no
one can hold office after the age of 65.
Saying that he would not request a waiver of the norm, Sbarra
said of Fumarola: "I think she has the right profile to lead the
CISL for the next few years with responsibility, authority,
pragmatism, autonomy from politics, concreteness".
CISL is the second biggest of the Big Three trade union
federations in Italy.
The biggest and most leftwing is CIGL, formerly allied with the
Italian Communist Party (PCI).
The third biggest is UIL, once aligned with the Socialist Party
(PSI).
Sbarra and CIGL chief Maurizio Landini have recently led gneeral
strikes against the government's economic policy and the 2025
budget.
UIL Secretary-General Pierpaolo Bombardieri declined to take
part, stressing the need for dialogue with the government.
