Italian box office revenues in 2024
totalled over 493 million euros with approximately 69.7 million
movie theatre tickets sold, according to Cinetel data released
on Tuesday.
Ticket sales and revenue were in line with 2023 figures, with
revenue down 0.4% and tickets down 1.3% compared to last year,
marking a return to normalcy for the second year in a row
following the Covid-19 pandemic, despite strikes in the film
industry affecting output and the competition of major sporting
events such as the Paris Olympics this summer.
Cinetel stressed the importance of the summer season, with the
best results in box-office takings recorded between June and
August, and the Christmas period - up 28% compared to 2023, with
Italian productions and co-productions accounting for a 45%
share of the total.
Overall, seven out of 12 months of 2024 recorded higher ticket
sales and revenue compared to the previous year.
In particular, Italian productions and co-productions generated
some 121 million euros in revenue and attracted 17.8 million
viewers, accounting for 25.6% of the tickets sold, in line with
the result achieved in 2023 (25.9%), above the average recorded
in 2017-2019 (21%) and close to the average of the entire
2010-2019 decade (27.1%), said Cinetel.
The top three Italian box office hits were "Il ragazzo dai
pantaloni rosa" (The boy with the pink pants, 9 million euros in
revenue), "Parthenope" (7.5 million) and "Un mondo a parte" (A
world apart, 7.3 million).
In general, the top box-office hits included "Inside Out 2",
which grossed 46.5 million euros, "Oceania 2" (19.4 million) and
"Deadpool & Wolverine" (18 million).
