One tourist is dead after a reported
10 people were poisoned by carbon monoxide at an apartment
building in the north-eastern city of Trieste in the night
between Monday and Tuesday.
Firefighters on Tuesday were still working to determine the
cause of the leak, which they said occurred in a number of
rental holiday apartments in the building, which is located in
the city centre.
The victim is a 60-year-old Austrian citizen and his wife, also
aged 60, is among those injured.
Only the victim's wife was hospitalized.
Firefighters evacuated the entire building while the incident is
being probed.
On Monday, another person died after four German tourists were
also poisoned by carbon dioxide, allegedly from the fireplace of
their rented holiday home in Cefalù, in the Palermo area.
Firefighters found the chimney of the villa still full of smoke
and said the poisoning was most probably caused by the fumes
coming from the embers.
