A stature of the Baby Jesus has
returned to the Vatican's 'presepe', or Nativity Scene, in the
Saint Paul VI Hall, but not lying on a keffiyeh after the
presence of a traditional Palestinian scarf drew criticism from
some in the Jewish world.
The statue was removed amid the controversy and the Vatican
press office said the keffiyeh had been added at the last minute
by the artist of the work, which was donated by the Palestinian
community of Bethlehem.
When the Paul VI Hall reopened on Friday for the first time
since Christmas for a papal audience, the Baby Jesus was lying
on straw.
