Journalist Furio Colombo died at 94 Tuesday, his family said.
One of Italy's top left-leaning journalists, Colombo was a Rai State broadcaster correspondent, notably from America; a leader writer for liberal daily la Repubblica; editor of post-Communist daily Unità; founder of leftwing daily Il Fatto Quotidiano; and a member of parliament for three legislatures for the Left Democrats (DS), the centre-left Olive Tree, and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
''This morning Furio Colombo passed away at the age of 94, assisted by his wife Alice and daughter Daria'', said a note from the family, adding that his funeral will take place at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome on Wednesday 15 January at 3:00 p.m.
''His activity as a journalist was very intense," the note said, "which saw him as a correspondent for Rai and correspondent from the United States, editorialist for Repubblica, editor of L'Unita, founder of Il Fatto Quotidiano.
"Member of Parliament for three legislatures for the DS L'Ulivo and the PD.
"He carried out an intense cultural activity as an author of literary and cinematographic texts and directed the Institute of Culture in New York for three years, as well as holding a chair at Columbia University.
"He also held corporate positions first at Olivetti and then as Fiat Representative in the United States''.
