The League party led by Deputy
Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini on Thursday held a
meeting of the federal council at the end of which it issued a
note saying Salvini, Veneto Governor Luca Zaia, a leading member
of the party, and the council shared all objectives, that Veneto
represented a model of regional government and that a winning
team should never be changed.
"Veneto is a model of good government appreciated at a national
and international level", said the note, adding that "you
shouldn't change a winning team".
The gathering discussed the issue of a third term for governors,
said the note.
Regional elections are scheduled to be held this year in a
number of regions including Veneto.
Under the existing rules, the League's highly popular Veneto
Governor Zaia faces having to step down.
Salvini and Zaia are staunch supporters of lifting the existing
ban on regional governors serving three consecutive terms in
office, saying it is a limitation of democracy.
Overall, representatives of Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing
Brothers of Italy (FDI) party - the main party in the
right-centre majority - and of the League's other majority
coalition partner Forza Italia oppose the change, together with
the main opposition groups, the Democratic Party (Pd) and the
Five Star Movement (M5S), with notable exceptions including PD
Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca.
The government has appealed to the Constitutional Court against
a regional law passed by the Campania regional assembly last
year to enable centre-left Governor De Luca to stand for a third
term over its conflict with the national law setting a two-term
limit for governors.
