Premier Giorgia Meloni said she
understood where United States Vice President JD Vance was
coming from in his criticism of Europe in his speech at the
Munich Security Conference in February in an interview with the
Financial Times on Friday.
"I have to say I agree," Meloni replied when ask about Vance's
allegations that Europe has backslided on its commitment to
freedom of speech and democracy.
"I've been saying this for years . . . Europe has a bit lost
itself."
In the speech Vance also said internal threats were the greatest
dangers to European democracy, not external challenges from
Russia or China, and that its biggest problem was mass
immigration.
In the interview, Meloni also said the US President Donald
Trump's criticism of the EU was not directed at its people, but
at its "ruling class . . . and the idea that instead of reading
reality and finding ways to give answers to people, you can
impose your ideology on people".
