ANSA has come top among Italy's news brands for the trust the public has in it for the seventh consecutive year in the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2024.
The 13th edition of the report, which profiles the media situations in 47 countries, said 75% of Italians trust ANSA.
That put it ahead of the SkyTg24 news channel (69%), financial daily Sole 24 Ore (67%) and the TG La7 news (62%).
The report added that the website of Italy's top news agency, ANSA.it, was third in Italy for online weekly reach, with 18% of people using it at least once a week, behind Fanpage (22%) and Mediaset's TgCom24 (19%).
"The Italian media system is in a state of flux," the report said.
"Historically characterised by a dominant television sector, a weaker yet influential press, and a slower digital transformation than elsewhere, today the media landscape sees television losing its primacy, major publishers selling traditional print outlets, and digital-born outlets seriously challenging established players.
"The closure of news kiosks, the Italian outdoor stands where print newspapers have traditionally been sold, also testifies to the severity of the crisis of the Italian news industry.
"Nearly 2,700 news kiosks disappeared across the country in four years, with the total number dropping to approximately 13,500 by 2023".
