Istat said Tuesday that the number of
people in employment in Italy dropped by 17,000 (0.1%) in May
with respect to April, ending a run of three consecutive
month-on-month rises.
The national statistics agency added that the employment rate
fell by 0.1 of a percentage point to 62.2% in May.
But it added that the number of people in work was up by 462,000
(2.0%) compared to May 2023 at 23.954 million.
Istat said the year-on-year increase was driven by an increase
of 498,000 in the number of people in permanent jobs and a rise
of 42,000 of the self-employed, while the number of temporary
workers decreased by 77,000.
The agency said Italy's unemployment rate was stable at 6.8% in
May, while the jobless rate for under-25s who are active on the
labour market rose of 0.1 of a point to 20.5%.
It said the inactivity rate was also up 0.1 of a point to 33.1%.
