Italian grid operator Terna reported
on Thursday that electricity generated by renewables overtook
production from fossil fuels for the first time in Italy in the
first half of 2024.
"During the first six months of 2024, 43.8% of energy demand was
covered by renewable sources (compared to 34.9% for the first
six months of 2023): a historic record on a half-year basis,"
Terna said.
It said production from renewable sources was up by 27.3%
compared to the first half of 2023, while production from fossil
fuels decreased 19%.
"Over the period under consideration, the operating capacity of
renewables increased by 3,691 MW (including 3,341 MW in solar
power)," Terna said.
"This value is 1,074 MW higher (+41%) than the same period of
the previous year".
