Nearly 30,000 people were evacuated from Vicenza on Friday as the northeastern city underwent an operation to remove a World War II-era bomb still imbedded beneath the earth.
Authorities said the English 'blockbuster' weighed 1,800 kilos, prompting them to block off everything within a 2,500-meter radius outside an American military base.
Shortly after midday authorities announced the process to
remove the bomb was a success, and that they were in the process
of defusing it.
"It's been going well, from the moment that we didn't hear
any explosion," quipped Civil Protection chief Franco Gabrielli.
