Two men have been ordered to stand
trial in Italy over the death of a brain-tumor patient they
tried to treat with bicarbonate of soda.
Luca Olivotto, 27, died in a clinic in Tirana, Albania, in
2012, after he was administered the bicarbonate of soda.
According to records his cause of death was "metabolic
alkalosis", a condition in which the pH of tissue rises beyond
the normal range, which can be a result of increased bicarbonate
concentrations.
Tullio Simoncini, a Italian doctor who has been officially
barred from the profession, and his collaborator Roberto
Gandini, face manslaughter charges.
Simoncini also faces a charge of abusive practice of the
medical profession.
