Investigators have busted a gang that
allegedly illegally harvested the data of thousands of TIM
(Telecom Italia) users.
Police arrested 13 people and seven others have to regularly
sign in with the authorities.
The suspects include rogue TIM employees who allegedly extracted
personal information from the company's data banks,
intermediaries who sold on that data and the owners of call
centres who used the information to illegally contact potential
clients and get commissions, for example by getting them to
switch provider.
The investigation stemmed from a complaint lodged by TIM itself.
The company said it would discipline its employees involved and
would stand as a civil plaintiff in the ensuing criminal trial.
