New cases of COVID-19 in Italy have
fallen by 24.9% over the last week, the independent health
foundation GIMBE said Thursday.
After three weeks of remaining stable at around 1.2 million, the
number of cases fell to just over 900,000 in the last week,
GIMBE President Nino Cartabellotta said.
He cautioned, however, that "the circulation of the virus
remains high", with the Omicron variant still spreading fast.
Cartabellotta said some 7.4 million Italians have remained
unvaccinated.
Some 2.46 million of these are in the 5-11 year old age group
and 693,000 in the 12-19 bracket, as well as 1.89 million over
50s at a high risk of serious illness.
