The Italian foreign ministry said on
its Viaggiare Sicuri (Safe Travel) site on Monday that it
"strongly recommends compatriots present in Russia on a
temporary basis (tourists, students, people on business trips or
similar) to rapidly organize their return to Italy".
It noted that Italy and the rest of the European Union had
closed its air space to Russia on Sunday following Moscow's
decision to invade Ukraine and said this would lead to the
cancellation of flights.
It advised Italians in Russia to look for "alternative
itineraries" to get back to Italy, and noted that connections to
Istanbul, , Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai were still active.
It also said it was possible to take a bus from St. Petersburg
to Estonia's capital Tallinn and thus return to the Schengen
area via land.
It also advised all planned travel to Russian to be postponed.
