Former centre-right Forza Italia (FI)
Senator Marco Siclari was arrested for mafia vote buying in a
case involving the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mob on Thursday.
Siclari was taken into custody to serve a five year four month
term for "political-mafioso exchanges", judicial sources said.
He had previously avoidd arrest because of his parliamentary
immunity, which lapsed when he failed to be re-elected in the
September 25 general election.
The case involves 'Ndrangheta clans based at Sant'Eufemia
d'Aspromonte and Sinopoli, in the Calabrian highlands.
'Ndrangheta is Italy's richest and most powerful mafia thanks to
its domination of the European cocaine trade.
