Italian police on Monday made 20
arrests against a prominent clan in the Neapolitan Camorra mafia
including the mother of a clan boss who is the son of the
supreme leader of the family.
Antonietta Virenti, 64, the mother of boss Michele Mazzarella ,
son of clan leader Vincenzo, was arrested on charges of helping
run protection rackets in the working class Naples quarters of
Forcella and Maddalena.
The Camorristi demanded 'pizzo' protection money from local
street hawkers, including migrants, police said.
Some 200 foreign sellers were preyed on but only one of them
reported the clan to the police.
Those arrested are also suspected of other mafia crimes,
committed between 2018 and 2021, police said.
