The lifesaving work of the Italian
coast guard must be acknowledged, European Home Affairs
Commissioner Ylva Johansson said Tuesday.
"We have to remember that over the same weekend as the Cutro
tragedy, the Italian Coast Guard saved the lives of 1,300
people: they are doing a great job and this should be
acknowledged," said Johansson during a news conference on
European integrated border management and mutual recognition of
return decisions at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
In Europe we have saved one million lives in the Mediterranean,"
added European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas.
"This is a figure that is not highlighted," he added.
