A local administrative court in the
northern autonomous province of Trentino has suspended an order
to put down a 17-year-old female bear that attacked and killed a
jogger in woods near the Alpine town of Caldes last week, the
Anti-Vivisection League (LAV) said on social media Friday.
The tribunal accepted an appeal presented by LAV against the
order issued by the Province of Trento President Maurizio
Fugatti for the bear tagged as Jj4 that killed 26-year-old
Andrea Papi on Mount Peller to be eliminated.
This is the second time the court has overturned an order for
Jj4 to be put town.
The first ruling dates to 2020, after the bear attacked and
injured two hikers, a father and son, on Mount Peller.
The same year, the Council of State, Italy's second-tier
administrative court, reportedly overturned a separate order by
the Trentino president to capture the bear.
On Thursday the provincial government of Trento said a second
bear, an 18-year-old female tagged as Mj5, is also be put down
after it attacked a 39-year-old male hiker on March 5, in the
Rabbi Valley woods, a few kilometres from Mount Peller.
Environmental agency ISPRA had issued a favourable opinion on
putting down Mj5 as well as Jj4, Fugatti said.
The case of the deadly bear attack has made headlines in Italy
and around the world.
Papi was the first Italian to be killed by a bear in modern
times.
