Italy's Constitutional Court on
Tuesday paved the way for the 30-year term of jailed anarchist
leader Alfredo Cospito to be cut.
Cospito, 55, has been on hunger strike for five months against
his tough 41 bis jail regime, normally reserved for Mafia
bosses.
He has lost over 40 kg and increasing concerns over his health
have helped spur anarchists protests and violent action
including arson attacks in his support inside and outside Italy.
The Constitutional Court on Tuesday cleared the way for a
discount in Cospito's sentence, dropping the rule that would
have bound the Turin Court of Appeal to necessarily sentence him
to life imprisonment for the attack on the Carabinieri Cadet
School in Fossano, for which he got 20 years.
He is serving an additional 10 years for kneecapping a nuclear
company executive.
