Another 17 police have been placed
under investigation in in a case of alleged brutality in Verona
that has already led to the arrest of five officers, judicial
sources said Wednesday.
The case, in which street people and migrants in custody were
allegedly tortured by being used as 'mops' to clean up their own
urine, has gained shocked headlines in Italy and redirected the
spotlight on a move by the ruling rightwing Brothers of Italy
(FdI) party to rescind the crime of torture from the criminal
code.
The Verona public prosecutor's office's is investigating alleged
episodes of torture, mistreatment and embezzlement that on
Tuesday led to the arrest of the five police officers on duty at
the Veneto city's flying squad.
Against the 17, the office has applied to preliminary
investigations judge (GIP) Livia Magri to apply "interdiction
measures", such as suspension from duty or transfers, the
sources said.
