Law enforcement authorities seized a
record 26.1 tonnes of cocaine in 2022, up 22% over the previous
year and around five times more than in 2013, when 4.9 tonnes of
cocaine were seized, Italy's Central Directorate of Anti-Drug
Services said on Thursday.
However, in its annual report the central anti-drug directorate
said overall drug seizures fell from 92.8 tonnes in 2021 to 75
tonnes last year, a drop of 19%.
Trafficking picked up in 2022 after a dip during the Covid-19
pandemic, according to the report, which also highlighted the
use of new, more efficient methods of delivery using internet
and couriers and encrypted platforms.
