Northern Italian rail company Trenord
said Monday its network had suffered widespread damage and
breakdowns due to the extreme weather events that ensued after a
heat wave broke there.
Torrential rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms and high winds have
swept the north of Italy over the past few days, while the
centre and south continue to swelter in the latest heat wave.
Trenord announced "various damage to the infrastructure due to
the bad weather" with numerous traffic problems.
It said trains on various routes in Lombardy are suffering
delays of more than one hour with many cancellations on all
lines.
In particular, the lines to Como, Lecco and Sondrio are blocked
due to "serious damage to the Monza station", the company said.
