Filippo Turetta, the 22-year-old
Padua university biomedical engineering student under
investigation for murdering his ex girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin
on November 11 in a case that has shocked the nation, was
extradited to Italy on Saturday.
Turetta was arrested near Leipzig in Germany last Sunday after
more than a week on the run.
He was handed over to Italian police and flown to Venice from
Frankfurt.
Carabinieri were set to take him to Verona jail.
He will have his own cell and be under 24 hour surveillance for
his own protection and to prevent self-harm, judicial sources
have said.
Turetta is currently being probed for kidnapping and voluntary
homicide, but this could change to premeditated murder.
Investigative sources have said that a few days before the
murder the suspect bought adhesive tape online that could be
compatible with the piece of adhesive tape found in the
industrial area of Fossò near Venice where Cecchettin suffered
the second stage of the fatal attack.
Investigators are also reportedly considering charging him with
the crime of concealing the corpse.
Cecchettin's body was found a week ago in a gorge between Lake
Barcis and Piancavallo in the Friuli province of Pordenone.
It has emerged that Cecchettin wanted to cut all contact with
Turetta but was afraid to do so because she believed he might do
himself harm.
"I feel I am in a situation where I would like him to disappear,
I would like to have no more contact with him, but I don't know
how to do it because I feel guilty, I'm too afraid that he might
hurt himself somehow," said Cecchettin in a voice recording
broadcast on TG1 on Wednesday night.
"He comes to tell me things like that he is super-depressed,
that he has stopped eating, that he spends his days staring at
the ceiling, that he thinks only about killing himself, that he
would like to die," she added.
Turetta admitted to the investigators who stopped him on a
highway outside the spa town of Bad Durrenberg that he had
"killed my girlfriend".
The case has shocked Italy, in part because of the age of the
victim and the alleged murderer and because of the brutality of
the killing.
