A Rome military appeals court on
Monday sentenced a
former Italian navy officer to 29 years in jail for allegedly
spying for Russia, one less than he got at the military court of
first instance last March.
In a related civil case, frigate captain Walter Biot, a father
of four from Pomezia outside Rome, was found guilty by the court
of assizes in the capital of espionage and bribery after being
caught handing over secret documents to Russian embassy
officials, and received a 20-year sentence 10 days ago.
Italy expelled two Russian embassy officials in 2021 in relation
to the case.
