In not all cases of pediatric gender
dysphoria (GD) treated at the Careggi hospital in Florence has
psychotherapy been used as recommended before the administration
of the drug triptorelin, according to preliminary data collected
by inspectors deployed by the health ministry last week, sources
told ANSA on Wednesday.
GD is the mismatch between gender identity and the sex assigned
at birth.
Triptorelin is sometimes used to delay puberty in patients with
GD to give them time to gain awareness of their gender identity
and prepare for the psychological, medical, developmental,
social and legal issues that may lie ahead of them.
Last Wednesday the government sent inspectors to the Careggi to
"check whether the regulations have been followed," said Health
Minister Orazio
Schillaci.
"It is absolutely not a punitive gesture," he added.
Mara Campitiello, the head of the minister's technical
secretariat, told ANSA at the time that Schillaci would receive
the inspectors' report within 15 days.
