A Milan appeals court on Wednesday
upheld a life sentence and a year and a half of solitary
confinement for Alessandro Maja, a 60-year-old interior designer
who, on the night between 3 and 4 May 2022, killed his
16-year-old daughter Giulia and his wife Stefania Pivetta, 56,
in their family home in Samarate (Varese) with a hammer while
they were sleeping.
Immediately afterwards, the man also tried to kill his eldest
son Nicolò, 23, who was severely disabled and was absent from
the trial today because he is in hospital for a planned
operation.
Maja's defence lawyers tried to get the court to order a second
appeals trial on the basis of new evidence that Maja had been
"raving" for days before the double murder and should therefore
be declared mentally incompetent in the case.
